Anticipation abounds at World Tour stop in Kish Island

Kish Island, Iran, February 16, 2017 - A good start of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour season carries over from Fort Lauderdale as Kish Island 3-Star 2017 completed its qualification round on Wednesday.

Iran’s hometown heroes Mojtaba Amiri and Mohammad Sadeghi Malati celebrated a 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) win against Swiss duo Adrian Heidrich/ Gabriel Kissling.

Earlier, Hungary’s Izsák Soós/Tamás Meszlényi scored the first point to open the event.

But the Hungarians succumbed (11-21, 16-21) to Russia’s Daianov and Yury Bogatov, who just won gold elsewhere.

Australians Cole Durant and Zachery Schubert have likewise made it past the qualification round and are set to face Iranians Rahman Raoufi and Bahman Salemiinjerboroun on Thursday.

The United States’ John Mayer and Ryan Doherty squeezed in some sightseeing before they play Russia’s Maxim Sivolap/Igor Velichko in the main draw on Thursday.

The men's-only Kish Island 3 Star moves into a new format for the main draw on Thursday, with a field of 32 teams competing in a single elimination round.
