Iran players step into spotlight at Kish Island

 
Lausanne, Switzerland, February 14, 2017 - Iran's top players are ready to shine in front of their fans when the second event on the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour kicks off on Kish Island on Wednesday, February 15.

Last year, Qatar’s Jefferson Santos Pereira and Cherif Younousse achieved a great feat for their country when they bagged a first-ever World Tour gold medal.

In the second edition of the event at Kish Island, hosts Iran are fielding in their best beach volleyball pairs to claim honours. Rahman Raoufi/Bahman Salemiinjehboroun, Abhamohammad Salagh/Abolhamed Mirzaali, Abbas Pourasgari/Arash Vakili are in the main draw, while Mojtaba Amiri/Mohammad Sadeghi Malati will begin their campaign in the qualification round.

Raoufi is one of the most seasoned players in Iran with over 100 international caps. He has been in the beach volleyball programme for 14 years, while his partner Salemi has been in the programme for three. The pair have won Asian beach tour titles in Thailand, Indonesia and Oman.

Salagh started his career in volleyball then made an early shift to beach volleyball. Salagh has also played in over 100 international matches - his best finish was a gold medal in the Asian Men’s Beach Volleyball Championship in 2011. Salagh’s partner is 28-year-old Aqqala-native Mirzaali, who has earned one gold, three silver and five bronze medals in his young beach volleyball career.

Pourasgari and Vakili both aim to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The pair is training under experienced coaches that have led them to win various national titles. They will use their stint in the World Tour to develop their technical skills.

Sadeghi and Amiri are the youngest in their group, and like Pourasgari/Vakili, they will be in Kish Island to gain experience at a top level competition. The pair also aims to play at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
