Beach volleyball to enjoy carnival atmosphere in Shepparton

Shepparton, Australia, February 28, 2017 - The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Shepparton event this weekend on March 4 and 5 will attract players from around the world, as well as the cream of Australia’s best talent. Volleyball Australia and Shepparton City Council are also setting up a major carnival atmosphere for the tournament.

Volleyball Australia’s Head of Beach Volleyball Events, Baz Wedmaier, said the World Tour coming to Shepparton will be a weekend to remember.

“Our overall goal is to bring the beach to the bush,” Wedmaier said.

“This is a very different location, and the support of Shepparton Council and Vic Events has been visionary to be able to allow this to happen.

“Being a central country town, it has links all over regional Victoria, so we are able to show many different people from a wide area our great sport. Many people in the crowd will have rarely been exposed to our sport, so we want to make a positive impression.”

Tickets for the final day of the World Tour are available, and Wedmaier urged people to get in quick to avoid the disappointment of missing such a big event on their doorstep.

“There’s a real buzz among our Australian players about this tournament,” he said.

“They don’t often get the chance to play against the world’s best at home, so to also have the chance to take beach volleyball to a region of Australia so passionate about sport is a great thrill.

“Many of our players are Olympians who have played on the biggest sand stages in the world. How fantastic the people of Shepparton, and especially the kids, will get a chance to see up close how exciting beach volleyball is.”

Wedmaier said those who have never been to an Australian beach volleyball event should expect the unexpected.

“The Shepparton Council is bending over backwards to make sure this is going to be a day for everyone,” he said.

“It will have the atmosphere of a country fair, complete with live music, great food, rides for the kids and much more.”
