Lausanne, Switzerland, February 15, 2017 - The launch of the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour season also features the adoption of the new FIVB World Ranking system, which is established based on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Ranking Points earned at a team's eight best performances in all FIVB sanctioned or homologated beach volleyball events over a 365-days period.
Men's ranking
After one men’s event on the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour at the Fort Lauderdale Major, USA’s Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena lead this week’s FIVB World Rankings with 4,920 points while Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins duo is second with 4,650 points. Third is Brazil’s Olympic champions Alison Cerutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt with 4,620 points, fourth is Brazil’s Evandro Goncalves/Pedro Solberg with 4,450 points and fifth is Poland’s Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak with 3,800 points.

For the women after one event on the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, Brazil’s Talita Antunes/Larissa Franca stand on the top rung on the ladder of the current FIVB World Rankings with 5,420 points. In second with 5,160 points is USA’s April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings, third with 5,080 points is Germany’s Olympic champions Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst, fourth with 4,170 points is Gemany’s Chantal Laboureur/Julia Sude and fifth with 3,840 points is Germany’s Karla Borger/Britta Buthe.
FIVB World Ranking - WomenFort Lauderdale Major - Men
Winning the men’s gold medal at the Fort Lauderdale Major with a perfect 8-0 match record was Brazil’s ninth-seeded qualification team of Saymon Barbosa/Alvaro Filho who stopped Brazilian eighth-seeded compatriots Evandro Goncalves/Andre Loyola in straight sets, 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) in 39 minutes in the final. Playing in their first FIVB World Tour event as a team, it was the third career FIVB World Tour gold medal for Brazil’s Alvaro and second for Saymon.
Alvaro Filho and Saymon Barbosa celebrateEarning the men’s bronze medal in Fort Lauderdale was USA’s top-seeded Olympians Phil Dalhausser who won in three sets over American 24th-seeded compatriots Ryan Doherty/John Hyden, 2-1 (14-21, 21-13, 15-10) in 47 minutes.
In the Fort Lauderdale men’s semifinals, Brazil’s Saymon/Alvaro overcame USA’s Doherty/Hyden in two sets, 2-0 (21-16, 21-9) in 33 minutes and Brazil’s Evandro/Andre advanced to the gold medal match by defeating USA’s Dalhausser/Lucena in another two-set match, 2-0 (21-16, 21-19) in 43 minutes.
Brazil’s Saymon was selected as the men’s most outstanding player of the FIVB Swatch Fort Lauderdale Major.

Winning the women’s gold medal at the Fort Lauderdale Major with a 6-1 match record was Brazil’s second-seeded Olympians Talita Antunes/Larissa Franca who stopped Brazilian fifth-seeded compatriots Agatha Bednarczuk/Eduarda ‘Duda’ Lisboa in straight sets 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) in 38 minutes. It was the 32nd career FIVB gold medal for Talita and the 60th career FIVB gold medal for Larissa, who is the women’s career victory leader. As a team in 28 events on the FIVB World Tour, it was the 14th gold medal for Talita/Larissa.

To reach the women’s gold medal match in Fort Lauderdale, in their respective semifinals, Brazil’s Talita/Larissa defeated USA’s S. Ross/Sweat in straight sets by twin scores, 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) in 34 minutes while Brazil’s Agatha/Duda advanced by coming from behind to defeat Germany’s Laboureur/Sude in three sets, 2-1 (24-26, 21-18, 15-11) in 56 minutes.

Following the FIVB Swatch Fort Lauderdale Major Series in the USA, the men’s only FIVB Kish Island 3-Star will be held in Iran followed by the double-gender FIVB Shepparton 1-Star in Australia (March 4-5).
Growing history
The men’s only $100,000 FIVB Kish Island 3-Star in Iran this week will be the 354th men’s tournament since the FIVB began play in 1987. The double-gender FIVB Shepparton 1-Star event will be the 315th FIVB women’s tournament since their competition started in 1992.
FIVB 2017
Based in Lausanne, Switzerland as the international governing body for the Olympic sports of Beach Volleyball and Volleyball, the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar features a purse of US$6.81 million with a season that extends from February to August. The calendar involves a new star-rating system with five 5-Star events, four of which are part of the FIVB Swatch Major Series portion of the schedule, three 4-Star events, six 3-Star events, four 2-Star events and seven 1-Star events and the special Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals in Canada (August 23-27). The showcase event will be the $1,000,000 2017 FIVB World Championships in Vienna, Austria (July 28-August 6).
There will also be the FIVB U21 World Championships in Nanjing, China (July 11-16).
The 2017 portion of the 2018 FIVB World Tour calendar will start in October in Qinzhou, China with one more women’s only event in October in Phuket, Thailand.
