Brazilian & Czech Republic women lead Porec Major

Porec, Croatia, June 28, 2017 - Despite a delay due to rain, 30 of the 32 women’s pool play matches scheduled here Wednesday were completed as seven teams from five countries won two contests each in the $600,000 Porec Major.

Two teams each from Brazil and Czech Republic were undefeated in pool play Wednesday along with pairs from Canada, Switzerland and the United States.  Women’s group matches will be completed Thursday starting with two Pool D matches postponed from Wednesday until 9 a.m.  The first round of women’s elimination bracket competition will be played Thursday afternoon.

Undefeated Brazilian pairs Wednesday were top-seeded Talita Antunes/Larissa Franca (Pool A) and seventh-seeded Fernanda Alves/Barbara Seixas (Pool G).  Czech Republic teams with 2-0 records were fifth-seeded Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Slukova (Pool E) and 18th-seeded Kristyna Kolocova/Michala Kvapilova (Pool B).  Kolocova and Kvapilova's first victory Wednesday was a 2-1 win over second-seeded Chantal Laboureur/Julia Sude of Germany, the 2016 Porec Major champions.

Other teams posting 2-0 match record Wednesday were sixth-seeded Melissa Humana-Paredes/Sarah Pavan of Canada (Pool F), ninth-seeded Nina Betschart/Tanja Huberli of Switzerland (Pool H) and 14th-seeded Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes of the United States (Pool C).

With the pool winners receiving a first-round “bye”, the women’s 24-team elimination bracket continues Friday with 12 more contests being played to set the lineup for Saturday’s semi-finals and medal matches.  The Porec Major gold medal team will split the $40,000 first-place prize.
