Lausanne, Switzerland, August 7, 2017 - Following an epic celebration of pro beach volleyball in Austria, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) has now held 20 events overall on the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour calendar.
Last week, the FIVB schedule saw the concerto of the sand at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Vienna 2017 presented by A1. There have now been 14 men’s events and 18 women’s tournaments completed on the 2017 FIVB World Tour.

InstagramFollowing the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, the $800,000 Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals presented by Vodafone will be held from August 23 to 27 in Hamburg, Germany. The finals will feature the top eight teams in the FIVB World Rankings with a maximum of two pairs per country, along with four wild card selections for each gender.
FIVB VIENNA MEN
Winning the men’s gold medal last week at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships with a 7-1 match record was Brazil’s fourth-seeded Evandro Goncalves/Andre Loyola who held off Austria’s courageous home-country 12th-seeded Clemens Doppler/Alexander Horst in two tough overtime sets 2-0 (23-21, 22-20) in a grueling, crowd-pleasing 57 minutes. It was the fifth career FIVB World Tour gold medal for Evandro, second for Andre and first gold for the Evandro/Andre tandem who have now played in just eight FIVB World Tour events as a team.
It was the third silver medal in 50 FIVB World Tour events for Austria’s Olympians Doppler/Horst. Andre, just 22 years old, became the youngest men’s gold medal winner ever at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. An overflow crowd of over 10,000 cheered courageously during the gold medal match in the purpose-built Red Bull Beach Arena on Danube Island.

Playing in their 10th FIVB World Tour event, it was the first bronze medal for Russia’s Krasilnikov/Liamin team.
In the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships men’s semifinals, Brazil’s Evandro/Andrea advanced to the gold medal match by defeating the Nehterlands' Van Garderen/Varenhorst in two sets, 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) in 42 minutes and Austria’s home-country favorites Doppler/Horst advanced by stopping Russia’s Krasilnikov/Liamin in two sets, 2-0 (22-20, 21-19) in 48 minutes.

FIVB VIENNA WOMEN
Winning the women’s gold medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships with an awe-inspiring 8-0 match record was Germany’s fourth-seeded Olympic champions Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst who came from behind to defeat USA’s surprising 14th-seeded Lauren Fendrick/April Ross in three sets, 2-1 (19-21, 21-13, 15-9) in 64 minutes, the longest women’s match out of 108 total in the entire tournament. Playing in their 42nd tournament as a team, it was the 10th career FIVB gold medal for Ludwig and Walkenhorst both as a team and individually as well. For USA’s Fendrick/A. Ross it was just their first silver medal in just five tournaments as a team.
Germany's Laura Ludwig worked hard to earn the women's Most Outstanding Player award at the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.A truly remarkable run considering they both have had injuries and surgeries, Germany’s Ludwig/Walkenhorst duo has now won the gold medal at the most recent Olympic Games, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals, the CEV European Championships and the German National Championships.
Earning the women’s bronze medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships was Brazil’s top-seeded Talita Antunes/Larissa Franca who held off Canada’s emerging seventh-seeded Sarah Pavan/Melissa Humana-Paredes in three sets, 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 18-16) in a grueling 59 minutes. For Brazil’s Talita/Larissa, they have now competed in 35 FIVB World Tour events as a team, it was their second bronze medal as a team to go along with 16 gold medals and three silver medals. For Canada’s Pavan/Humana-Paredes it was their second fourth place finish and sixth final four finish in eight tournaments as a team.
To reach the women’s gold medal match in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships from their respective semifinals, Germany’s Ludwig/Walkenhorst stopped Brazil’s Talita/Larissa in two sets, 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) in 37 minutes and USA’s Fendrick/A. Ross came from behind to beat Canada’s Pavan/Humana-Paredes in three sets, 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 15-11) in 55 minutes.
