Along with Rio another two venues have been added in Nanjing and Nantong in China. It is now less than a month until the 2017 World Tour begins with the Fort Lauderdale Major Series that runs from February 7-12.
Rio de Janeiro will host a double gender four-star event from May 18-21. It means that there are now three four-star events in 2017, along with tournaments in Olsztyn, Poland and Lucerne in Switzerland.
In 2016 the city hosted the Olympic Games where local favourites Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt won men’s gold and where Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst became the first European women to win an Olympic medal when they topped the podium.
The Brazilian city also hosted a Grand Slam earlier in the year that was won by USA’s April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings and Poland’s Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak.
Nanjing and Nantong are both two-star women-only events and will both take place in June. Nanjing will welcome the players from June 16-18, with Nantong running from June 23-25. Together they will be known as the Silk Tour.
Nanjing will also host the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships from July 11-16.
The Pacific Harbour Open which was postponed following heavy rainfall and flooding in Fiji is now scheduled to take place from June 23 to 24. The event in Shepparton, Australia will take place over two days from March 4-5.
The five-star event structure was instituted for the 2017 FIVB World Tour and is one of the many steps taken by the FIVB to modernize and streamline its competitions in a golden period for beach volleyball on the heels of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals from August 22 to 27 will mark the end of the 2017 season. A three-star event in Qinzhou, China which is scheduled to take place from October 11 to 15 will be the first event on the 2017/18 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.Quick links - Beach volleyball:
