Lausanne, Switzerland, November 30, 2016 - Selangor, Malaysia will host a double-gender FIVB Selangor 1-Star event from April 15-16. It marks the first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event to be held in Malaysia.
The 2017 FIVB World Tour schedule lists six other 1-Star events. The three women’s only 1-Star events will be held the Principality of Monaco (June 17-18), and in Korea, in Daegu (July 14-16) and Ulsan (July 21-23). Other double-gender 1-Star events besides Selangor include events in Pacific Harbour, Fiji (January 12-14), Shepparton, Australia (March 3-5), and Agadir, Morocco from July 21-23.

Latest VideosFacebookTwitterInstagramMedia GuidesThe five-star structure instituted starting with the 2017 FIVB World Tour is one of the many steps taken by the FIVB to modernize and streamline its competitions in a golden period for beach volleyball on the heels of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said, “The aim of the new structure is to provide a platform and formation of events that increase the number of competitions in a growing number of hosting countries and create a sustainable business model while providing additional commercial flexibility and opportunities.”
Selangor is one of the 13 states of Malaysia. It is on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and is bordered by Perak to the north, Pahang to the east, Negeri Sembilan to the south and the Strait of Malacca to the west. It surrounds the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, both of which were once under Selangor's territorial sovereignty.
The state capital is Shah Alam, however the first city in Selangor, and the royal capital is Klang. Another major urban center is Petaling Jaya which was awarded city status on June 20, 2006. Selangor is one of only two Malaysian states with more than one city; the other is Sarawak. Selangor has the largest city in Malaysia and it is growing rapidly due to modernization in the Klang Valley.
The state of Selangor has the largest economy in Malaysia in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) with RM 128.815 billion (roughly USD 42 billion) in 2010 making up 23% of the total GDP of Malaysia. This state is also the most developed in Malaysia with good infrastructure such as highways and transport. The state also has the largest population in Malaysia, with a high standard of living and the state's poverty rate is the lowest in the country.
Selangor has the largest population in Malaysia, and has shown considerable increase in recent decades due in large part to the development of the Klang Valley. The population was 1.5 million in 1980, and by 2000 it had more than doubled to 3,9 million and further increased to 5.4 million in 2010. As of 2015, its population was 5.8 million.
The 2017 FIVB World Ranking system will include FIVB Beach Volleyball Major Series, 5-star, 4-star, 3-star, 2-star and 1-star events along with additional pre-approved events at the inter-continental, continental and national levels.
Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments are the same, featuring 32-team pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
Country quota playoffs are also held, as needed, to determine the final teams for qualification tournaments.
The first men’s FIVB World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil while the first women’s FIVB World Tour event in Brazil was played in 1993 in Rio de Janeiro. The women’s FIVB World Tour held its first tournament in Spain in 1992.
